It is always a great thing to read up on tornado safety.  What would be a safe room for a tornado?  Well, in this following article we are going to explore what rooms provide the best safety during a tornado.  One of the top safe rooms during a tornado include a basement or some sort of shelter that is below ground level.  If there is no basement available, then please go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level of the house, be sure to be away from corners, windows, and doors.  For more information about tornado information, safety, and safe rooms, please keep reading on.

First of All, What Causes A Tornado?

A tornado occurs when warm moist air and cooler dry air come together in a thundercloud.  The collision of these two will form warm trapped air that rotate horizontally and eventually these clouds will topple over each other forming rain, hail, and lightening.  In the US each year there are 1,000 tornadoes.  If you live in what is known as "Tornado Alley", it is highly considered that you are aware of Tornado safety.

When is "Tornado Season"?

There is no such thing as a "tornado season", a tornado can strike anytime in any place.  However, tornadoes tend to spring up starting in late February and March, hitting a peak in April, and can still occur come September.  The time of day a tornado usually strikes is in the afternoon or in the evening, most likely around 5 P.M.  This is because the sun must be out to create warm air.

How to Prepare for a Tornado

First thing is first, be sure that if you live in a high tornado area, that your home insurance covers when a tornado strikes.  You want yourself and your family to be involved in tornado preparation such as having a reliable ground level safe room for a tornado.  This would be the lowest ground level room in the house such as a basement.  If a basement is unavailable, go to the lowest interior room and stand in between a doorway or in a hall way.  To protect your body use a mattress or a very sturdy piece of furniture.  Be sure to stay away from any glass including any windows, fish tanks, or hanging china.  Keep a wrench near the gas meter, and know how to turn off the gas in case a tornado or other natural disaster strikes.
