Ear Infections in Pets - Pet Ear Cleaner

Is your dog constantly scratching at his ears?  Is he also shaking his head?  How about a foul odor and discharge coming from within the ear canal?  These are common signs of an ear infection which your dog may have.  It is important to know the signs and symptoms of an ear infection on your dog. 

The reason for an ear infection could be a number of things.  Ear mites are a contagious parasite which could have came from another animal that your dog was associated with, thus leading to an ear infection.  Also, your dog may be having an allergic reaction to a certain food.  Bacteria and yeast tend to grow in dark and moist places such as your dog's ear canals.    Hormones might also be a major factor, if there is an excessive or low secretion of hormones, the could lead to a various of ear infections.  Ear mites are the most common cause of an ear infection.  Ear mites are a contagious parasite in which infect the ear of an animal who has come into contact with an infected animal. 

Symptoms of an Ear Infection in Dogs:

Symptoms of an ear infection in your dog include.. bad odor and discharge coming from within the ear, lethargy and irritation, scratching or rubbing of the head or ears, your dog may shake it's head constantly or tilt it to the side, soreness or visable redness in the ear flap.

Diagnosis of an Ear Infection

A local veterinarian must examine your dog's ears and would be able to diagnose whether or not your dog does in fact have an ear infection. If possible, it is recommended that you collect samples from your dogs ears so he or she could examine the samples under a microscope to be able to diagnose the infection.

Treatment of an Ear Infection

Treatment of an ear infection in your dog will be determined from different factors. Usually, antibiotics are dispensed to help clear the infection. Certain anti-fungal medications such as ketoconazole and itraconazole may be prescribed for a yeast infection. Sometimes, even an anti-inflamitory medication such as prednisone, prednisolone, or dexamethasone may be prescribed to help reduce the inflammation.
It may also be required that your Veterinarian may have to flush your dog's ears out and clean them properly.

How To Prevent an Ear Infection in Your Dog

Simple at home remedies could have a massive effect for prevention of ear infections.  Clip or trim any excess hair near the ears,  as this may be a breeding area for various bacteria and ear parasites.  Also, be sure to properly clean your dog's ears out every once in a while to prevent ear infections.  Be sure to remove any earwax and other accumulated waste a few times per week.
